	SOUTH AFRICA – Windsurf Spot’s Guide TXT : Claudio Marzeddu & Attilio Verdi Guida ai principali spot per windsurf della zona di Cape Town e dintorni. Partiamo proprio dal capo di buona speranza ed arriviamo ad Elands bay, percorrendo 300 km della costa atlantica in direzione nord.

	Cape Point Lo spot del capo di buona speranza. Si trova in mezzo a un parco naturale pieno di animali. Onde bellissime e potenti soprattutto se grosso. Vento spesso forte. Si affronta un oretta di viaggio da Table View, il paese dei surfisti, quando li non c’è abbastanza vento. Vento side-side offshore con il Sud-Est (vento predominante della regione). Il punto per uscire e’ una spiaggietta sottovento ai parcheggi che si raggiunge a piedi scappando dai babbuini. Attenzione, se si rompe qualcosa il posto più vicino è Platboom se vi va bene, se non vi va bene invece c’è l’antartide. Occhio agli Squali!! Necessaria la bassa marea, altrimenti l'onda diventa uno schiumone poco surfabile.

	Platboom Platboom è lo spot poco più a nord di Cape point. Non è il massimo con il SE, ma diventa bellissimo con il raro NW. Onde bellissime e potenti. Con il Nw il vento e’ un po rafficato ma appena si prende l’onda ci si dimentica quasi di avere la vela. Attenti a scogli e squaletti.
	Scarbrough Scarbrough è un paesino nella zona del capo di buona speranza, con una baia dove si trova un fantastico spot per il surf da onda. Per il windsurf e’ buono quando è grosso con il SE, il vento arriva side off mure a sinistra, ottimo per surfare. Onda tubante e veloce. Con il NW invece, il vento entra side on shore ed è buono per saltare. Rocce a destra e a sinistra ma fondale sabbioso sul picco. Anche qui ogni tanto si incontra qualche squaletto… Necessaria l'alta marea o si finisce addosso al Kelp (grosse alghe locali) affiorante.

	Sunset beach Lo spot più famoso del Sudafrica e uno dei più frequentati. Lunga spiaggia tra Milnerton e Table view. Ci sono 4 parcheggi dove armare l’attrezzatura. Vento spesso forte e onda abbastanza facile, tendente al close out oltre i 2-3 metri. Vento side shore mure a sinistra un pò rafficato per via delle case che stanno spuntando come funghi.
	Big Bay Spot molto facile. E’il posto più affollato della zona. L’onda è più lenta rispetto agli altri posti perchè è una baia protetta da file di scogli. Buono per saltare ma meno per surfare. Spot frequentato anche da decine e decine di surfisti da onda. Vento side – side on shore.
	Melkbos Spot molto frequentato. Di solito si esce qui quando a Sunset il vento è troppo forte. Onda tranquilla se piccolo, ma se è grossa (almeno un albero) diventa piuttosto seria e veloce, con una sezione finale veramente cattiva. Nelle giornate migliori si fanno anche 10 bottom turn sulla stessa onda. Se il vento e’ da 4 mq diventa un po’ choppata. Ottimo spot per saltare, è qui che letteralmente si vede la gente decollare!! Buona opzione quando la direzione dello swell è identica al vento dominante, cioè SE, e Sunset diventa piatto. Sunset infatti come anche gli spot vicini al capo di Buona Speranza necessitano di uno swell da SW.
	Yzerfontein Spot a nord di Melkbos. Anche qui spesso si va quando il vento a sud è troppo forte. Il vento è quasi sempre rafficato ed al massimo da 5 mq. Le onde sono lente ma lunghissime, specialmente se grosso. Pensate che con un albero d’onda si inizia a surfare dall’isoletta davanti alla baia, distante almeno 400 metri!!! Per saltare non e’ molto buono, ma per chi sa surfare a volte è uno spettacolo. Buona opzione quando la direzione dello swell è identica al vento dominante, cioè SE, e Sunset diventa piatto. Sunset infatti come anche gli spot vicini al capo di Buona Speranza necessitano di uno swell da SW.
	Swartritt Swartritt e’ un posto fantastico! Onde e vento perfetti, side – sideoff mure a sinistra. Onda che già oltre il metro è bella potente. Il vento raramente è rafficato. Fondale sabbioso e onde che entrano a set nella larga baia. Per arrivare a Swartritt si percorre la R27 (la strada che da Cape Town porta fino in Namibia) e si entra nell’omonimo paese. Lo spot è “proprietà” di una brutta signora che alle 5 di sera chiude i cancelli. Se siete in acqua e sentite dei colpi di fucile è la signora che vi avverte che le 5 sono passate!!! Si può comunque dormire in dei bei bungalow. Elands bay Elands bay è uno spot mitico per il surf da onda. E anche per il windsurf… onda velocissima e regolarissima con vento quasi off shore. Necessario un buon swell da W. Se supera i 3 metri è il massimo. Ottimo la mattina, perché nel pomeriggio spesso il vento diventa troppo forte anche per la 3.7! Attenzione ai surfisti da onda che hanno sempre la precedenza sull’onda. Rispettateli perché comunque rimane un loro spot. Se troppo affollato provate ad uscire sottovento: il vento è più side shore e l’onda non ha la stessa qualità del picco principale, ma rimane sempre ottima.

	A Guide to mains windsurfing spots ofi Cape Town and neighborhood. Starting from the Cape of Goodhope and arriving at Elands bay, running thru 300 km of the atlantic cost, direction north.
	Cape Point The spot of the cape of Goodhope. Situeted in the middle of a natural park natural full of animals. Beautiful and powerfull waves specially if big. Wind almost strong. I takes one hour by car from table view, surfers town, when there there's not enough wind. The wind is side-side offshore with the South-East (main wind of the region). The place to go is the small bech downwind from parkings that can be reached on foot chasing from apes. Beware, brokin anything means that next reacheable place is Platboom if you're lucky, otherwise the antartid pole. Beware to rocks and sharks!! Needs low tide.
	Platboom Platboom is the spot norther of Cape point. With SE wind is nothing special, but get gorgeous with the rare NW wind. Beautiful and powerfull waves. With Nw the wind is gusty but after catching the wave you'll forgive to have a sail. Beware to rocks and sharks.
	Scarbrough Scarbrough is a village close to cape of goodhope, with a fantastic surf spot in the bay. For windsurf is good if big with SE wind, the wind is side off from left, very good for riding. The wave is fast and tubing. With the NW the wind is side on shore and is good for jumpin. Rocks on both sides but the point is a beach break. Sometimes you can meet sharks… Needs high tide or you crash in to the Kelp (local seawheed).
	Sunset beach Most famous spot of South Africa and one of the most crowdy. Long beach beetwen Muizenberg and Table view. There are 4 parkings where you can rigg your stuff. The wind is almost strong and the wave is quite easy, tending to close out over 2-3 meters.The wind is side shore from left a little bit gusty because of the various houses growing as mushrooms.
	Big bay Very easy spot. Very crowdy. The wave is slower than other spots because the bay is protected by rocks stripes. Good for jumpin but not that much for surfing. Spot crowded by few surfers. The wind is side – side on shore.
	Melkbos Very crowdy spot. Usefull if at Sunset the wind is too strong. Easy wave if small, but if big (at least a mast) is serious and fast, with a gnarly final section. Best days allows even 10 bottom turns on the same wave. If the wind is for 4 mq became too choppy. Very good for jumpin spot, here you see riders flyng!! Good choice if the swell is SE.
	Yzerfontein Spot norther than Melkbos. Usefull if the wind is too strong souther. The wind is almost gusty and never stronger than 5 mq. The waves are slow but very long, specialy when big. When is mast high the ride starts from the small island facing the bay, 400 meters from the shore!!! Is not very good for jumpin, but for those that knows how to surf sometime is a real show. Good choice if the swell is SE.
	Swartritt Swartritt is a fantastic place! Perfect waves and wind, side – sideoff from left. The wave is powerfull even when small (1 meter). The wind rarely is gusty. Beach breaks and waves' sets rolling in the large bay. To get to Swartritt get along the R27 (the road that goes from Cape Town to Namibia) untill the village. The spot is “property” of an ugly lady that closes the gates at 5 p.m., if you're still riding while you hear some shotgun explosions is because the "lady" is warning of the 5 p.m. ritual!!! Anyway there're beautiful bungalows for rent. Elands bay Elands bay is a mithycal spot for surfing. And also for windsurfing… the wave is super fast and predictable with a wind close to off shore. Needs a W swell. Higher than 3 metri is at its best. Very good in the mornig, because in the afternoon often the wind gets too strong even for 3.7! Pay attention to surfers, they always have priority. Respect, it's their spot. If it's too crowdy try to go little bit downwind: the wind is side shore and the wave doesn't have the same quality of the main breack, but is also very good.
